Some sessions feel less like work and more like catching up with old friends. That's exactly how it felt seeing Keala and Shayne again one year after photographing their intimate Santa Barbara Courthouse elopement.
Last year, it was just the two of them exchanging vows in one of the simplest and most meaningful celebrations we've had the privilege of documenting. No big guest list, no elaborate timeline, just two people completely focused on each other. It was the kind of day that reminds us what weddings are really about, and we've loved following their story ever since.
To celebrate their first anniversary, they reached out about another session, and we couldn't have been happier to see them again. Since their wedding, their little family has grown with the addition of a second pup, who of course had to make an appearance. Watching the two dogs happily explore the trails while Keala and Shayne laughed together made the entire evening feel relaxed and wonderfully unplanned.
Douglas Family Preserve has long been one of our favorite places for couples sessions in Santa Barbara, and this evening reminded us why. As golden hour settled over the coastline, the warm light filtered through the eucalyptus trees before opening up to sweeping ocean views. It's one of those locations that never feels the same twice, and somehow always delivers the most beautiful light just before sunset.
Originally from Hawaii and now calling California home, Keala and Shayne have such an easygoing, joyful energy together. They're the kind of couple who don't need much direction because they're genuinely happiest simply spending time with one another. Whether they were walking hand in hand along the bluffs, laughing as their pups darted around the trails, or soaking in the last few minutes of sunshine overlooking the Pacific, every moment felt natural.
One of our favorite parts about being Santa Barbara photographers is getting to continue telling our couples' stories long after the wedding day is over. Weddings are just the beginning. Watching couples celebrate anniversaries, welcome new adventures, and create traditions together is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Happy first anniversary, Keala and Shayne. Thank you for inviting us back to document another chapter of your story. We can't wait to see where life takes you next.
If you're looking for a Santa Barbara couples photographer or planning an anniversary session, Douglas Family Preserve is one of our favorite locations for relaxed, romantic portraits with incredible coastal views and some of the best golden hour light in the city.
